2017  RAM  1500 vs 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 near Winchester, VA

Are you looking to purchase a new light-duty truck soon? If so, you have probably considered two worthy contenders, the RAM 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500. Both are capable trucks for work or play and they offer various cab and bed size options depending on your needs. The 2017 RAM 1500 is well-known for its superior ride quality and various engine options, including its eco-diesel engine. Its interior is more refined than others in its class and RAM has upgraded its automatic transmission to an eight-speed for 2017. The 2017 Chevy Silverado boasts new active grille shutters to increase fuel economy, and there is a Teen Driver feature that is now incorporated into its technology platform. Chevy allows you to choose from three different gas engines, but they do not have a diesel engine choice. If you would like to learn more about these two truck competitors, then read below to learn about their differences and similarities.

2017  RAM  1500 Power & Handling

The 2017 RAM 1500 is powered by one of these three engines: a 3.6-liter V6 engine, a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine, or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. The V6 engine produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, the diesel engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, while the V8 generates 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel drive is available in all trim levels and the new eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with most configurations. The 2017 RAM 1500 has an optional air-suspension system that creates an exceptionally smooth ride while also leveling out loads. The air-suspension system is adjustable, allowing you to lower the body two inches for easier entry or to lift it two inches for additional clearance.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Power & Handling

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also has three engine options. There is a 4.3-liter V6, which is capable of 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. The next option is a 5.3-liter V8 engine, which generates 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Finally, there is a 6.2-liter V8 engine, good for 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission mates with the V6 engine, while a six-speed automatic or an eight-speed automatic (depending on the trim) mates with the V8 engine options. Like the RAM 1500, four-wheel drive is also an option on all trim levels. The Silverado 1500 does not offer a diesel engine, nor does it have an air suspension option.

2017  RAM  1500 Features & Design

A highlight of the RAM 1500 is its many customization options. You can choose the size of your cab and bed, your engine size, color, trim and package option. Depending on your needs, RAM offers you the ability to select a truck to meet those needs. There are actually ten trims and ten exterior color options! The base trim includes automatic headlights, vinyl upholstery, a sprayed bed liner, cruise control, air conditioning, and more. Optional features can include the 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect and a cargo management system. Higher trims offer more luxurious features such as heated and ventilated seats, a driver memory system, a premium 7-inch driver instrument panel, running boards, and more.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Features & Design

Although its cab and bed configurations are similar to the RAM's, the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado comes in only eight trims and nine colors. The entry-level Silverado 1500 comes with air conditioning, daytime running headlamps, vinyl seats, a locking tailgate, and more. The higher trims include more comfort features and utility features such as a storage container under the rear seat, a rearview camera, towing mirrors, leather upholstery, Chevy's OnStar system, and more. The Silverado also has a package to help with cargo. It includes a sprayed bed liner, movable tie-downs and a cargo management system.

The RAM 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado share many similar features, but when it comes to overall ride quality, entry level MSRP, and sheer amount of customization options, the RAM 1500 takes the lead. The 1500 provides a diesel engine, and its entry level price is lower than the Chevy's. Its optional air suspension, which the Silverado does not have, provides maximum comfort in the cabin. The Chevy does have a respectable lineup of gas engines, and it also offers different cab and bed size options, but the RAM still excels with its superior cabin quality, ride quality, price and utility.
